Hoover Goes to the Pub

On a whim, I decided it was time to try the Hoover blanket as featured in Knitty Fall 2003.  I admit, it is slow going… But there’s a certain addicting quality to the monotony.  I’m varying the width of my stripes slightly to give it a bit more interest.  I may make them wider later on, but for now I’m happy with it.

Consequentially, the addiction means it’s been running around with me for the past couple of days.  Tonight, Hoover went to the pub.

It was my company’s jam night and we stayed through a couple of sets.  Good food, good music, and knitting.  Not a bad evening, eh?

P.S.
That’s Cascade 220 Superwash in two different colors.  More project information can be found here.

Evening Reading

This is usually the last thing I see before I go to bed at night.  Trying to read a little something and relax… and a kitty head pops over my book.

She’s awfully demanding, but how can you say no to that face?

(P.S. That’s my new-to-me Dilbert book she’s looking over, purchased at Powell’s on our Portland trip.  It’s Obvious You Won’t Survive By Your Wits Alone)

What do you do with fun orphan socks?  You make a sock piggy!

From Stray Sock Sewing, this sweet little gal is a little late for Valentine’s Day.  She’s just missing eyes and a curly tail to be complete.

Mini Vacation

For my birthday/Valentine’s Day/President’s Day, we decided to take a mini vacation up to Portland.  We drove up to my sister’s on Friday night and stayed.  I got Tyler the new Madagascar movie and sent my sis and her hubby out for a grown-up evening.  Tyler was very well behaved and went to bed without too much fuss.

In the morning, we drove up to Portland.  We got a killer deal on Priceline for a very nice hotel downtown.  The rest of the trip went like this:

Yarn.

Knit-Knit Studio was the first one we hit.  Followed up Knit Purl, Yarn Garden, and Twisted.

Food & Drink.

This is the Premium Sampler (or what’s left of it) from Rock Bottom Brewery.  Excellent beer, even better cheese and bread appetizer.  OMG, so good…

There was also a visit with good friends, a stop at a retro music store, and the obligatory Powell’s run.  The trip was way too short.  Sam and I both agree we could live in Portland.  Maybe someday…

(As for the yarn I bought, I was very restrained.  But I did get some killer stuff.  A proper post on that soon.)

Quarter of a Century

Today is my birthday.  I am a quarter of a century old.  I started to write a whole, long post about how I feel right now.  But I’m finding I can’t put the words together.

I feel very anxious about this birthday.  It seems to be a critical one for my internal clock.  Am I running behind or do I have plenty of time?  My brain and my body are in a constant argument about this and I’m not sure who will win.  For now, I’m going to eat cake, kiss my husband, and try to enjoy my birthday to it’s fullest.

Gratuitous Chloe Shot

I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this picture of Chloe since last week.  So, here she is in all her cuteness.  How can you resist that face?

Another Busy Weekend

It was another busy weekend around here.  Saturday started off with a family birthday party for me (my birthday isn’t until Thursday, but we’ll be out of town, so the party was early).  Lots of people came and had delicious ice cream cake (my Mommy made it and it was sooooo good!).  The guys eventually had a jam session with every guitar in the house (we have a surprising number).  Tyler got in on the action before the party started by trying out my violin.

On Sunday, we went to Kaylee’s birthday party.  There were lots of adorable children, including the birthday princess (I made her crown).

After the party, we went to a movie with Dad.  We saw the Pink Panther 2.  I haven’t laughed that hard at a movie in a long time.  It’s predictable and slapstick, but still, hilarious.  So, all in all, a busy weekend.  But on the upside, we spent it with friends and family.

And, bonus!  We had birthday tacos at Gramma’s today.  My sis-in-law makes killer tacos.  I’m sooooo full…

Happy Finishing Dance

Hurray for Finishing Friday (Ok, a day late, but I started the post on Friday)!!  I have a few happy little projects to report on.

finishing_friday_button

First up is Tyler’s “Swipperies”!  They’re finally done (although now Heather wants to add froggy eyes…)!

Second: Anthony’s Spiderman Slippers.

Using the same pattern as Tyler’s slippers, but in a smaller size and with a little creative license.  I used white puff paint to make the bottoms non-skid.  The spider on the top is needle-felted on.  These were done entirely out of things I had on hand, except for the puff paint.

My third finished item this week is the Baby Kimono.

Knit from Jack’s fabulous pattern, this was quick and easy.  I shortened the sleeves to make it more spring-like.  It still needs to be blocked, but I’m pretty happy with it.

And, although this wasn’t started last year as the rest were, I get to claim my Amanda Hat as a FO.

Knit in two days, this is definitely one of my favorite hats.  It used about a half a skein of some well-aged Malabrigo from my stash.

That’s all for this week.  I have a few things I’m still considering frogging, but just haven’t had the time to really sit down and make an assessment.  Hopefully I’ll get to that this next week.

Family History

My great-grandfather died when I was very little.  I remember that he was a large quiet man in a wheelchair who gave us $5 at Christmas and on our birthday.  He died when I was probably 4 (I’m not exactly sure).  I remember the funeral, but didn’t really understand it.  My grandfather passed away when I was in college.  I understood this one and, of course, was very sad.

Since then, my grandmother has set about making her life a happier one.  Among other things, she took up bowling again, bought a hot tub, and put new floors in the kitchen and bathroom.  She also began cleaning out closets that held stuff from my grandfather and great-grandfather.  One day she called my dad up and told him she had a pile of instruments from great-grandpa and if he didn’t want them, she was going to take them to the thrift store.  Needless to say, we rushed down there and took them off her hands.

In that pile of instruments, was a locked guitar case.  Since my husband plays, two of the guitars came home with us.  We broke open the lock and lo’ and behold, this is what greeted us.

That, my friends, is a 1960′s (either ’63 or ’64) Gretsch Chet Atkins Signature solid-body electric guitar.

The reason I am telling you all this leads up to yesterday…

One of the perks of working where I do, is sometimes, I get to meet neat people.  My work puts on a series called “Industry Legends” where they have the owners of big companies come and talk to us about the history of their company.  This one was Fred Gretsch of Gretsch Guitars and Drums.

It was started in the 1880′s by his great-grandfather (also named Fred) and now he owns it.  The history of the company is fascinating if you ever get a chance to visit their museum in Georgia, do it.  They had rare video footage and lots of neat things to say.  I learned a lot that I never knew I didn’t know.

3254232285_2d9537857d

The best part of the event came at the end, though.  I’d brought in the family  Gretsch (I call it the “Old Man”) for him to see.  It was displayed on stage during the presentation (squee!).

Then, at the end, he signed it.

3255064190_c7f0ee290b

Talk about a nice guy!  He not only posed for a picture, but he signed the family guitar!

3254230695_8b11e54377

It was the coolest day I’ve had in a long time.  I can’t wait to tell this story to my nephew when he’s a little older, and then someday to my kids.  It will certainly be one to pass down for many generations.

(Side note: Hauling a solid-body guitar around in an antique wooden case in heels is very tiring.  That sucker is heavy!)

Make It Brief

I have pictures for you.  Well, I will, they’re just not here yet.  Think of them as future events that you can predict will happen soonish.

I finished the Amanda Hat for me (and wore it today)!  It’s lovely and wonderful and squishy.  I got several compliments.  But best of all, it fits and I love it.

(Invisible future picture goes here.)

I’m working on a knit crown for a friend’s little girl’s birthday this weekend.  It’s pink with lovely pink beads in a variety of shades.  I’m using leftover  yarn from the Pink Baby Matinee Jacket and this pattern from Interweave Knits.

(Invisible future picture goes here.)

That’s all you get for now.  I’ve hung my suit on the door because tomorrow I get the chance to meet the owner of Gretsch Guitars.  I’m taking Great-Grandpa’s Gretsch in for him to see.  I’m hoping he’ll pose for a picture.

(I thought of asking him to hold the sock, but my co-workers think I’m strange enough already…)

P.S.
I just finished up the initial packets for the IYSSC Club over at Lime & Violet.  And let me say OMG.  If you’re in that club, you are so lucky!
