Plastic bags are killing us. Just read this. Thanks to Ann & Kay for the link on their MDK blog.
What can we do about it? Make our own darn grocery bags! I have been successfully remembering my own bags for about 2 or 3 months now. It has cut down on the amount of plastic bags littering my house and has made me feel slightly less guilty about all I do the to environment. (I’ve also been carrying a reusable coffee cup for over a year now. I rarely forget it!).
Anyway, we as crocheters and knitters have a responsibility to save the planet. There’s enough of us out there, we could make a big impact. A quick search on Ravelry revealed tons of free bag patterns. I begin with the newest free pattern from Mason Dixon Knitting, in honor of their new book. Here are ten free bag patterns that a quick search on Ravelry revealed. I have tried to bring you patterns from independent crocheters, knitters, and designers. Enjoy and here’s to making tomorrow a bit greener.
- Monteage Bag Pattern from Mason Dixon Knitting
- Elisa’s Nest Tote from the Purl Bee
- Crochet Grocery Bag from Knit-O-Matic
- BYOB from Knitty
- Net Shopping Bag from Yarn Demon
- Rust Goes Green from Jill’s Chat
- Beginner Crochet Market Bag by Cristi H. Brockway (Ravelry Download)
- Mineco by Krista A. (Ravelry Download)

(The bonus… when they decide to start charging for plastic bags all over the U.S., we’ll already have ours ready and can use that money for yarn!)
Thanks for listing these patterns! They charge for bags out here already, and even if they didn’t – it is so important to bring your own!
Thanks for including Rust Goes Green in your list. I’ve received many positive comments about it. If anyone has any questions about the pattern – please feel free to contact me.
Thank you so much for including my crochet market bag on your list! I hope it leaves the world just a bit less junky. =)
